ABOUT ELLY CHAN

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Elly Chan made her orchestral debut at fifteen. She studied with Professor Joanna Li from Moscow Conservatory and was greatly influenced by her Russian piano pedagogy. Chan received her BMus degree with First-Class honour and completed her master degree with Distinction, specialising in Piano Studies under the supervision of Dr. Mark Hutchinson and Jakob Fichert.

Inspired by her former piano teacher Dr Xenia Pestova, Chan is interested in playing different genres from Bach to Kurtág. During her undergraduate study, Chan received performance scholarship from the School of Music. At the end of second year and final year, she was twice awarded the School of Music’s Overall Achievement Prize for the highest marks of her year. In her final year of undergraduate study, she has been awarded The Eric Morris Memorial Prize for Performance in which she was awarded the highest mark among all the recitalists. She was also the recipient of Dr John Robert Jones Prize, which is awarded annually to a student whose academic performance is judged to have been particularly meritorious in that year and is considered as the University's most prestigious prize. Chan won the School of Music annual concerto soloist competition, in which she was also the first freshman who has won in the competition. In the same year, she was one of the twelve finalists in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod’s Young Musicians Competition.

Elly showed authoritative technique, a professional level of creative and confident interpretation. She chose a diverse programme of technically and interpretatively challenging works, and her performance demonstrated a deep understanding of each.

Milton Rubén Laufer (United States), pianist

Elly presented an imaginative programme. There was much drama and vigour in her performances, as well as a lot of impressive technical control.
